HBO Max needed an activation that would cut through the crowded media landscape of New York Comic Con and connect fans with season 3 of the critically acclaimed show, Doom Patrol.
Drawing from show insights and a carnival themed cliffhanger at the end of season 2 we launched Doom Patrol’s Carnival Patrol outside the Javits Center. The 1200SQFT space featured a full size recreation of fan favorite character Danny the Ambulance, multiple photo-ops, and several Doom Patrol themed games underneath a big top tent. Sideshow acts including a magician, a sword swallower, and a contortionist along with Drag Queen performances, cast appearances, Doom Patrol trivia challenges, and a DC cosplay contest extended the reach of the activation and kept convention attendees entertained both in and outside of the tent.
The carnival pulled in new fans with flair, fun, and prizes while rewarding existing fans with deep series and character references. Over the course of 4 days we gave away 6000 prizes including t-shirts, comics books, pins, and even silly putty to the more than 2600 people who played games under the tent with fans waiting in line for 45 minutes or more to enter. Additionally countless thousands of convention attendees engaged with the photo-ops and entertainers outside the tent making Doom Patrol’s Carnival Patrol one of the most successful activations at NYCC 2021.

HBO Max’s Doom Patrol reimagines one of DC’s most beloved properties – part support group, part superhero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. One of the unique aspects of the show is that it is heavily character driven with the super-heroics and action scenes taking a back seat to the individual characters as they struggle with existential challenges and a constantly shifting team dynamic. With that in mind I wanted to make sure that the activation highlighted each character from the show in a unique way, giving guests the opportunity to discover and connect with the characters they found most interesting.
While not technically a member of the Doom Patrol Danny the Ambulance, a sentient genderqueer ambulance who protects society’s misfits from the outside world, is a beloved and key character in the show. We transformed a full size ambulance into Danny with a graphic wrap and placed it as the cornerstone, main attract point, and photo-op for the activation. An interactive screen allowed Danny to communicate with the audience and the Drag Queens helping to bring the spirit of Danny’s character to life.
Rita Farr, aka Elasti-Girl, has the ability to stretch her limbs to extreme extents. However when she is stressed she can lose control of her powers causing parts of her body to droop and at extremes turn her into an amorphous blob. The Elasti-Mirror gave fans the chance to see how they would look when distorted in a similar manner as Rita.
Larry Trainor, aka Negative Man, draws his power from a mysterious alien spirit that bonded to him, allowing him to fly and control electricity among other abilities. The Negative Energy Maze is both a representation of Larry's electrokinetic powers as well as the complex paths he navigates while learning to accept both the alien spirit and himself.
Vic Stone, aka Cyborg, had portions of his body replaced and enhanced with cybernetics after almost dying in a chemical explosion at his father's lab. The Cyborg Claw Machine allowed guests to try out their own cybernetic abilities as the navigated a robot claw to collect prizes including pins, t-shirts, glow in the dark bouncy eye balls (a nod to the season 2 finale of the show), and Rita Farr's silly putty.
Crazy Jane is host to 64 different personalities, each with their own super power, which manifest at opportune, or sometimes inopportune, moments. A repurposed "love tester" machine invited guests to step up to see which of Jane's personalities they would be and which super power they would have.
Cliff Steele, aka Robotman, was a race car driver before he suffered a terrible racing accident and his brain was transplanted into a robot body. As he struggled to accept his new robot form Cliff started building an elaborate slot car track to distract himself. Cliff Steele's Slot Car Speedway invited fans into Cliff's world as they raced for glory and prizes.
With the experience being located outdoors I had to consider both the footprint and protection from the elements for the guests and games. A custom red and yellow 18' tall circus tent provided the perfect eye-catching thematic solution. Posters and flags helped to brand the activation for convention attendees while also serving as a billboard for drivers passing by the Javtiz center on 11th Ave. Danny the Ambulance was placed front and center to help attract attendees to the activation while the space between Danny and the tent became a stage and gathering point for the various performances throughout the weekend.
