ROOM

Spotify was looking to build a dynamic and interactive brand lab within their headquarters to educate, engage, and inspire potential marketing clients by showing them how Spotify’s ad platform and listener data could help them connect with audiences and consumers on an emotional, relevant and cultural level through the power of music.

The Spotify Record Room is an experience designed to showcase the power of Spotify’s unique data in an analog environment that is covertly high-tech. Drawing inspiration from high-end record stores and premium listening rooms the space would allow users to literally dig for and discover data in much the same way they’d dig through record crates at a shop or explore their own music collection.

Role: Creative Director, Concept Development, Experience Flow, Layout, Scenic & Environmental Art Direction

The Space
The space was designed feel very cool and hip, but also warm and inviting — a place people would be happy to simply hang out in for extended periods of time. The furniture is modular and can be arranged to accommodate a single large group for a presentation, several smaller breakout groups for work sessions, or cleared out entirely so the room can be used as an auditorium for intimate concerts.

Features like a wet bar and subtle embedded lighting that reacts to music help to round out the space and make it feel more comfortable.

The Data Experience
The walls of the room would be lined with “data” records – interactive 12” albums that represent different datasets such as demographics, geographic locations, or listening habits. Each album sleeve is fitted with an e-ink screen that displays live data related to that album’s subject. Placing an album on a glass table in the room will turn the table into an interactive display with further information, stacking multiple records on a table reveals intersections from the various data sets allowing anyone to remix data and discover insights.

Additionally every album includes a “real” LP that can be placed on one of the turntables along the wall to trigger a playlist of music related to that album’s data.
